Postgraduate Research Scholarships for local students

The following UTS Research scholarships are available to support local students to study in Masters by Research and Doctoral programs at UTS.

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)

The Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are funded by the Commonwealth Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) and are tenable at an Australian tertiary institution for doctoral and masters research degrees. Competition for the APA is high. In 2008, 25 APA scholarships were allocated to UTS.

The benefits include a tax-exempt stipend of three years for a PhD candidate and two years for a Masters candidate for a full-time award valued at $22,500 per annum (2010 rate), relocation and thesis allowances. The scholarships are open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia. Applications close 31 October.

UTS Doctoral Scholarships (UTSD)

The UTS Doctoral Scholarships have conditions and allowances similar to the APA. However, the awards are funded by UTS and are not transferable to other institutions. Applicants for APA will be automatically considered for UTSD. Applications close 31 October.

Throughout his career, Sir Gerard demonstrated his commitment to people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. The scholarship provides an Indigenous Australian with a stipend and research support to undertake full-time PhD studies at UTS. Applications close 31 October.

Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI)

These scholarships are funded by the Australian Research Council’s Linkage-Project grants and provide an opportunity for outstanding postgraduate students to undertake industry-based research. The benefits include a tax-exempt stipend valued at $26,669 per annum (for projects commencing in 2009), relocation and thesis allowances. Academic staff who apply for project funding may nominate a particular student as the scholarship recipient or will advertise the scholarship if a student is not nominated on a successful funding application.

Commercialisation Training Scheme Scholarships (CTSS)

The Commercialisation Training Scheme is an initiative of the Commonwealth Government to provide high quality research commercialisation training for the next generation of Australian researchers.

UTS and its ATN partners have developed a Graduate Certificate in Research Commercialisation which meets the requirements of the Scheme.

Students who have completed their doctoral/masters assessment, including those nearing completion of their research degree, are eligible to apply. Successful applicants will be granted special leave from their research degree to undertake the Grad Cert on a full-time or part-time basis and will have their tuition fees paid. Full-time students will receive a stipend at the current APAI rate. Any ongoing scholarship will be suspended for the duration of the Grad Cert, and resumed at completion of the course with the end date being adjusted.
