When do applications for scholarships open and close?
Applications for the Australian Postgraduate Award, the University Doctoral Research Scholarship and the R.L. Werner Postgraduate Research Scholarship open in August and close at the end of October.
On what basis does the University offer research scholarships, and when will I hear if I have been successful? The University Graduate School is responsible for making all scholarship offers. The University Graduate School Board approves a final 'Order of Merit' list of candidates, on which it bases the offers for Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs), University Doctoral Research Scholarships and the R.L. Werner Postgraduate Scholarship. The Department of Education, Science and Training sets quotas for APAs, and the University determines the number of internally-funded scholarships to be offered.
The first round of offers is made immediately before the Christmas break. If some candidates decline the offer, the University continues to work down the Order of Merit list until the quotas are met. Although the University encourages students to commence study on their scholarship by the end of March, students can change their mind and new offers can be made until the end of July.
The University Graduate School monitors the Order of Merit list closely until the scholarship quotas are filled. We can give you advice on the likelihood of you getting an offer after the first round, based on this list.
How does my supervisor set up a scholarship?
Any member of staff who wishes to set up a new scholarship for a particular student must advise the University Graduate School in writing. They should also refer to the document 'Procedures for Setting up a Faculty Scholarship', which is available from the University Graduate School.
When will I receive my scholarship payment?
You will receive your first payment in the first nominated pay period after you submit your acceptance of scholarship offer and bank details forms. If necessary, you will be backpaid from an earlier date, but no earlier than the date of your enrolment. The bank details form must be signed by yourself and your supervisor confirming the date that you enrolled and commenced your studies.
Can I claim a moving allowance under my scholarship?
The Australian Postgraduate Award, the University Doctoral Research Scholarship and the R.L. Werner Postgraduate Scholarship all include a moving allowance. Details about this allowance can be found in the 'Conditions of Award' for each scholarship.
