UTS Research scholarships

The following section provides information for domestic research students on the range of scholarships available, how to apply and how they are awarded. International applicants should refer to the International Research Scholarship page. 

How to apply

Newly Commencing Students
  • Newly commencing research students should complete an Application for Admission to a Higher Degree by Research and Scholarship by the advertised deadline. For step by step instructions on how to apply for admission to a higher degree by research, including a link to the application form, please visit the UTS Applying for a research degree and scholarship page. Please be aware that applications for scholarships are only open once a year.
Currently Enrolled Students

Currently enrolled research students are only eligible to apply for Australian Postgraduate Awards and UTS Doctoral Scholarships. To apply, please complete the HDR scholarship application form for current students (docx, 79kb) by the advertised deadline.

Chancellor’s Research Scholarships (CRS)

The Chancellor’s Research Scholarships are offered from 2012 to highly ranked newly commencing doctoral students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and research potential. The scholarships are valued up to $35,000 per annum, which comprises an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) plus a UTS Top up. The eligibility criteria for these scholarships are the same as for the APA, however Chancellor’s Research Awards are only available to newly commencing doctoral students each year. UTS: Research Excellence Scholarships (RES)

The UTS: Research Excellence Scholarships are offered from 2012 to highly ranked newly commencing doctoral students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and research potential. The scholarships are valued up to $30,000 per annum, which comprises an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and a UTS Top up. Eligibility criteria for these scholarships are the same as the APAs however the UTS:Research Excellence Scholarships are only open to newly commencing doctoral students each year. Re-opens in 2015

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)

The Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are funded by the Commonwealth Government Department of Education (opens an external site) and are awarded to students of exceptional research potential undertaking a Higher Degree Research (HDR) in Australia . In 2013, 81 APA scholarships were allocated to UTS.

The benefits include a tax-exempt stipend of three years for a PhD candidate and two years for a Masters candidate for a full-time award valued at $25,392 per annum (2014 rate), relocation and thesis allowances. The scholarships are open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia. For the full benefits and eligiblity conditions, please refer to the conditions of award. UTS Doctoral Scholarships (UTSD)

The UTS Doctoral Scholarships have conditions and allowances similar to the APA valued at $25,392 per annum (2014 rate). However, the awards are funded by UTS and are not transferable to other institutions. Applicants for APA will be automatically considered for UTSD. Applications are submitted through GRS. R L Werner Scholarship

This scholarship is named after the first President of the NSW Institute of Technology, one of the predecessor institutions of the current UTS. The scholarship has the same value and conditions as the UTSD. Applicants for the APA will automatically be considered for the R L Werner scholarship. Applications are submitted through GRS. Sir Gerard Brennan Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2004 to honour the work of the former Chancellor, Sir Gerard Brennan, AC KBE, who was also former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. Throughout his career, Sir Gerard demonstrated his commitment to people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. The scholarship provides newly commencing Indigenous Australian students with a stipend and research support to undertake a higher degree by research in the field of Law at UTS. Quentin Bryce Law Doctoral Scholarships

The Faculty of Law offers the Quentin Bryce Law Doctoral (QBLD) scholarships for commencing Doctor of Philosophy students to promote and reward quality research within the faculty. In 2012, 5 are offered to commencing doctoral students. The scholarship provides a stipend of $30,000 per annum for 3 years and a research support fund of $1,500 per annum. Applications for the QBLD require a separate application to the Faculty of Law before the advertised deadline. Applications for Spring 2014 close 30 May 2014, while applications for Autumn 2015 close 31 October 2014. Please visit the Faculty of Law's QBLD website for details.

Jumbunna Postgraduate Research Scholarship

The Jumbunna Postgraduate Research Scholarship is offered to commencing Indigenous Australian students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research at UTS. Preference is given to students who are completing a research project that has the potential to benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The scholarship comprises a UTS Doctoral Scholarship and a University Top Up to $50,000 per annum, and is provided to assist with general living costs. Australian Research Council (ARC) and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Scholarships

These scholarships are funded either by the Australian Research Council's Discovery or Linkage-Project grants or National Health and Medical Research Council through selected university academics and provide an opportunity for outstanding postgraduate research students to undertake industry-based research. The benefits include a tax-exempt stipend valued at APA rates or higher. Academic staff who has been awarded the research grants will select a particular student as the scholarship recipient or will advertise the scholarship either on Faculty/Institute websites or through the Postgraduate Scholarships Database for Australia, JASON anytime during the year. Scholarship ranking systems

Each Faculty/Institute scores and ranks applications to decide which students will be awarded a research degree scholarship. The ranking schemes are approved by the Graduate Research School Board and vary from faculty to faculty.
